Understanding GMAT Scoring

The GMAT total score (200–800) is derived from your Verbal and Quantitative scaled scores through a complex proprietary algorithm. IR (1–8) and AWA (0–6) are reported separately. A 700+ score puts you in the top 10% of test takers. For the GMAT Focus Edition, scores range from 205–805 across three sections.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the GMAT total score calculated?
The GMAT Focus Edition (from 2023) is scored from 205 to 805, combining Verbal Reasoning (60–90), Quantitative Reasoning (60–90), and Data Insights (60–90). The classic GMAT total score (200–800) was based on Verbal (0–60) and Quant (0–60) scaled sections. AWA (0–6) and IR (1–8) are reported separately and do not affect the 200–800 total.
What GMAT score do I need for an MBA?
Top 10 MBA programmes (Harvard, Wharton, Booth) have median GMAT scores of 720–740. For top 50 programmes, 650–700 is generally competitive. Many programmes now accept GRE equivalents. The average GMAT score for accepted students varies significantly by school and cohort.
Is the GMAT harder than GRE for MBA admissions?
The GMAT is traditionally more focused on business-relevant reasoning skills. Many schools now accept both equally. If you are stronger in verbal and writing, GRE may suit you better. If you excel in structured analytical reasoning, GMAT can be advantageous.
How many times can I take the GMAT?
You can take the GMAT up to 5 times per year and up to 8 times total over your lifetime. Most schools see all your scores, though many use the highest score (Score Select allows you to choose which scores to send for GMAT Focus Edition).
Can Nigerians take the GMAT?
Yes. The GMAT is available at Pearson VUE test centres in Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt). The GMAT Focus Edition test fee is approximately $275 USD. You can also take the GMAT online from home. Register at mba.com.
