Frequently Asked Questions
What is the GRE score range?
GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170 in 1-point increments. Analytical Writing (AWA) is scored from 0 to 6 in 0.5-point increments. The combined Verbal + Quant total is reported as 260–340. AWA is reported separately.
What GRE score do I need for a top US graduate school?
For highly competitive programmes (Harvard, MIT, Stanford), aim for 160+ Verbal and 165+ Quant (330+ combined), with AWA 4.5+. For most good graduate programmes, 155+ Verbal and 155+ Quant (310+ combined) is competitive. Requirements vary significantly by programme and university.
Is the GRE required for all US graduate programmes?
Not anymore. Many universities made GRE optional or abolished the requirement during COVID-19, and a significant number have maintained that policy. Check the specific programme requirements — many top MBA, Law, and STEM programmes still prefer or require GRE scores.
What percentile is a 155 in GRE Quant?
A 155 in GRE Quantitative Reasoning corresponds to approximately the 58th–62nd percentile. For Verbal Reasoning, 155 is approximately the 70th percentile. Percentile rankings differ between sections because the test-taking population varies in mathematical vs verbal background.
Can Nigerian students take the GRE?
Yes. The GRE is administered at Prometric test centres in Nigeria, including in Lagos and Abuja. You can also take the GRE at home (GRE Home Edition). Registration is done through the ETS website. The test fee is approximately $220 USD.
