Frequently Asked Questions

Is NECO accepted for university admission in Nigeria?
Yes, NECO results are widely accepted by JAMB and Nigerian universities. Most institutions accept WAEC or NECO (or a combination of both sittings) as a valid O'Level qualification.
What is the NECO grading system?
NECO uses the same grading system as WAEC: A1 (Excellent), B2 (Very Good), B3 (Good), C4 (Credit), C5 (Credit), C6 (Credit), D7 (Pass), E8 (Pass), F9 (Fail). Credits are C6 and above.
Can I combine WAEC and NECO results for admission?
Yes. JAMB allows candidates to combine results from WAEC and NECO sittings (maximum of two sittings). The same subject must not appear in both — you combine different subjects from each sitting to make up your required 5 credits.
How many NECO credits do I need?
The minimum requirement is 5 credits in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics (for most courses). For sciences, you also need credits in Physics, Chemistry, and/or Biology depending on the course.
What is the difference between NECO SSCE and NECO GCE?
NECO SSCE is the standard Senior School Certificate Examination held in June/July for SS3 students. NECO GCE (General Certificate of Education) is for private candidates and is held in October/November. Both are accepted for admission purposes.
