SAT Scoring Notes

This calculator uses an approximate conversion model. Actual SAT scores are determined by College Board's official scoring tables which vary by test date and form. Treat these estimates as a planning guide. The digital SAT (DSAT) introduced adaptive testing in 2024, which may slightly affect score distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the SAT scored?
The current SAT (digital SAT from 2024) is scored on a scale of 400–1600. It has two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (200–800) and Math (200–800). There is no penalty for wrong answers — every correct answer adds a point.
What is a good SAT score?
The national average SAT score is around 1010–1060. For competitive US universities, 1200+ is considered good, 1400+ is excellent, and 1500+ is in the range for Ivy League consideration. For Nigerian students applying abroad, aim for at least 1200.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the SAT?
No. Since the SAT was redesigned in 2016, there is no penalty for incorrect answers. You should always guess if you are unsure, rather than leaving a question blank.
How do SAT scores convert to Nigerian university admission?
SAT scores are primarily used for US university admissions. Some UK and Canadian universities also accept SAT scores. Nigerian universities do not use SAT for local admissions — JAMB/UTME is used instead.
What SAT score do I need for a US scholarship?
Most competitive US scholarships for international students expect SAT scores above 1300–1400. Full scholarships at top universities typically require 1450+. Some state universities offer merit aid starting at 1100–1200.
