Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum TOEFL iBT score?
The maximum TOEFL iBT score is 120 points. Each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) is scored from 0 to 30, and they are added together for the total.
What TOEFL score do Nigerian students need for US universities?
Most US universities require a minimum TOEFL score of 79–80 for regular admission. Competitive programmes and universities often require 90–100+. Graduate programmes (MBA, Engineering, Medicine) typically require 100 or above.
Is TOEFL harder than IELTS?
Both tests are comparable in difficulty, but they test English differently. TOEFL is more academic in style with computer-based delivery. IELTS includes a face-to-face speaking interview. Most universities accept both. Choose based on your strengths — TOEFL favours those comfortable with American academic English and typing.
How long are TOEFL scores valid?
TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Most universities require scores taken within the past 2 years at the time of application. Plan accordingly if you are applying 1–2 years after taking the test.
Can I take the TOEFL in Nigeria?
Yes. ETS (the TOEFL organiser) has authorised test centres in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and other cities in Nigeria. You can also take the TOEFL Home Edition from your home with proper equipment.
