Frequently Asked Questions

What grades count as credit in WAEC?
Grades A1, B2, B3, C4, C5, and C6 are all considered credit passes in WAEC. Grade D7 and E8 are passes but not credits. F9 is a failure. You need at least C6 to count a subject as a credit.
How many WAEC credits do I need for university admission?
The minimum requirement is 5 credits in one sitting or two sittings, including English Language and Mathematics (for most courses). Some courses like Medicine and Sciences require credits in specific science subjects.
What is the WAEC grading system?
WAEC grades from best to worst: A1 (Excellent, 75-100%), B2 (Very Good, 70-74%), B3 (Good, 65-69%), C4 (Credit, 60-64%), C5 (Credit, 55-59%), C6 (Credit, 50-54%), D7 (Pass, 45-49%), E8 (Pass, 40-44%), F9 (Fail, below 40%).
Can I use two sittings of WAEC for admission?
Yes, JAMB and most universities accept results from two sittings of WAEC (or combining WAEC and NECO). However, a subject must not appear in both sittings — the combination must total 5 different credits.
Do I need Mathematics for university admission?
Mathematics is compulsory for most degree programs in Nigeria. Science, Engineering, Business, and Social Science courses all require a minimum of C6 in Mathematics. Only a few Arts-based courses allow substitution with Social Science subjects.
