Frequently Asked Questions

What is a weighted average?
A weighted average assigns different levels of importance (weights) to different values before averaging. Unlike a simple average, it accounts for the fact that some items matter more than others. For example, a final exam worth 60% should count more than a 10% assignment.
How do you calculate weighted average?
Weighted Average = Σ(Value × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weights). Step 1: Multiply each value by its weight. Step 2: Sum all products. Step 3: Sum all weights. Step 4: Divide the sum of products by the sum of weights.
Do weights need to add up to 100?
No, weights do not need to add up to 100%. The calculator automatically normalises them. However, using percentages (totalling 100%) is intuitive and makes it easier to understand how much each component contributes.
How is JAMB aggregate calculated using weighted average?
University admission aggregates use weighted averages. For example, UNILAG uses: Aggregate = (JAMB/400 × 50) + (Post-UTME/100 × 50). Here JAMB and Post-UTME each have 50% weight. Use our JAMB Aggregate Calculator for university-specific formulas.
What is the difference between weighted average and simple average?
Simple average treats all values equally: sum all values and divide by count. Weighted average gives more importance to certain values based on their weights. In academics, a final exam (60% weight) should have more impact on your grade than a quiz (10% weight).
