Monthly Cost = Monthly kWh × Tariff Rate (₦/kWh)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the power consumption of an appliance?
Power consumption (kWh) = Wattage (W) ÷ 1000 × Hours used. For example, a 200W device used 5 hours per day consumes 1 kWh per day. Multiply by your tariff rate to get cost.
Where can I find the wattage of my appliance?
Check the label on the back or bottom of the appliance, or look in the manual. It may say "W" (watts) or "VA" (volt-amperes). For motors and compressors, the running watts may be lower than the startup surge.
What is the difference between watts and VA?
Watts (W) measures real power consumed. VA (volt-amperes) measures apparent power. For resistive loads (heaters, bulbs), W ≈ VA. For inductive loads (motors, AC compressors), W < VA due to power factor (typically 0.7–0.9).
How do I reduce my appliance power consumption?
Use energy-efficient (inverter) models, switch off at the socket when not in use, maintain appliances regularly (clean AC filters, defrost fridges), use timers for water heaters, and replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs.
Can I use this calculator for generator fuel estimation?
Yes. A generator uses about 0.3–0.5 litres of fuel per kWh. At ₦1,200/litre, each kWh from a generator costs ₦360–₦600. Compare this to grid electricity to see your total energy cost.
