Frequently Asked Questions

How are prepaid electricity units calculated in Nigeria?
Your recharge amount is divided by your tariff rate (₦/kWh) after deducting fixed charges and VAT. For example, ₦5,000 at Band B (₦63/kWh) gives approximately 72–76 units (kWh), depending on standing charges.
What are the NERC prepaid meter tariff rates?
Band A: ₦225/kWh (20+ hrs supply), Band B: ₦63/kWh (16-20 hrs), Band C: ₦50/kWh (12-16 hrs), Band D: ₦40/kWh (8-12 hrs), Band E: ₦30/kWh (under 8 hrs). Check your meter sticker to confirm your band.
What charges are deducted from my recharge?
Typical deductions: Fixed charge (~₦750–₦1,000/month, deducted upfront), VAT (7.5% of energy charge), and meter maintenance levy. These reduce the units you get per recharge.
Why do I get fewer units than expected?
Your meter has fixed charges, VAT, and sometimes debt recovery that are deducted before energy units are credited. A standing charge may take 10–30% of small recharges.
How do I check my meter balance and tariff band?
Most prepaid meters: Press "00" to see balance in kWh, Press "07" to see tariff rate, Press "802" to see your customer number. The commands vary by meter brand (Itron, Landis+Gyr, etc.).
