The most widely accepted formula from the International Cat Care organisation: Year 1 = 15 human years (rapid development), Year 2 = +9 years (total 24), each subsequent year = +4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat is equivalent to about 36 human years.

Kitten: 0–6 months. Junior: 6 months – 2 years. Prime: 3–6 years. Mature: 7–10 years. Senior: 11–14 years. Geriatric: 15+ years. Indoor cats typically live longer than outdoor cats, as they face fewer risks.

Indoor cats live an average of 12–18 years. Outdoor cats average 8–12 years due to risks from traffic, predators, fights, and infectious diseases. Some cats live into their 20s — the record holder, Creme Puff, lived to 38 years. Mixed-breed cats tend to outlive pedigree breeds.

Cats are kept as pets in Nigerian homes, particularly in urban areas. They are also valued as working animals to control rodents. Veterinary care for cats is available in major cities. Common health concerns in Nigeria include fleas, worms, and upper respiratory infections — regular deworming and vaccinations are important.

Senior cats (11+ years) benefit from: more frequent vet check-ups (every 6 months), high-quality protein diet, joint supplements if needed, accessible litter trays and feeding areas (avoid stairs), warmth and comfort, dental care, and monitoring for kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and diabetes which are common in older cats.
