Frequently Asked Questions
What is VAT/GST rate in Nigeria?
Nigeria charges Value Added Tax (VAT) at 7.5% (increased from 5% in February 2020 via the Finance Act 2019). This applies to most goods and services. Some items are VAT-exempt: basic food items, medical services, educational materials, and exported goods.
Who must register for VAT in Nigeria?
Any business with annual taxable turnover above ₦25 million must register for VAT with FIRS. Businesses below this threshold may register voluntarily. Once registered, you must charge VAT on your invoices and remit to FIRS monthly.
What is the difference between adding and removing tax?
"Add tax" mode: you have a pre-tax (net) price and want to know the final price including VAT. "Remove tax" mode: you have a gross price that already includes VAT and want to find the pre-tax amount. Example: ₦100 + 7.5% = ₦107.50. Or ₦107.50 minus tax = ₦100 net.
Are there items exempt from VAT in Nigeria?
Yes. VAT-exempt items include: basic food items (bread, cereals, fish, fruit, vegetables, meat), educational books and newspapers, baby products, medical products and services, exported goods and services, and commercial vehicles.
How do I remit VAT collected to FIRS?
VAT collected must be remitted to FIRS by the 21st of the following month. File your VAT return on FIRS e-Services portal (taxpromax.firs.gov.ng). You can claim input VAT (VAT you paid on purchases) against output VAT (collected from customers).
