Factors That Influence Final Height
While genetics (modelled by this calculator) account for approximately 80% of height variation, the remaining 20% is influenced by: nutrition (adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D, zinc), sleep quality (growth hormone is mainly released during deep sleep), physical activity, health conditions, and hormonal factors. Children in Nigeria with good nutrition and healthcare regularly exceed their genetic height predictions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is adult height predicted from parents' heights?
The mid-parent height formula (also called the Tanner method) averages the parents' heights and adjusts for gender: For boys: (Father's height + Mother's height + 13cm) ÷ 2. For girls: (Father's height + Mother's height − 13cm) ÷ 2. The result is the predicted mid-height with a ±8.5cm (±3.5 inch) range.
How accurate is height prediction?
The mid-parent formula predicts adult height within about 4–5cm (2 inches) for most children. Accuracy is best when both parents' heights are known accurately. Factors like nutrition, chronic illness, early puberty, and growth hormone issues can cause actual height to differ from the prediction.
Can nutrition affect my child's final height?
Yes, significantly. Adequate protein, calcium, zinc, and vitamin D are essential for bone development. Children with chronic nutritional deficiencies may not reach their genetic height potential. Proper nutrition during the first 5 years and through adolescence is critical for reaching full height.
At what age do children stop growing?
Most girls stop growing 2–3 years after their first menstrual period, typically around 14–16 years. Boys usually stop growing at 18–20 years. Growth plates (epiphyseal plates) close at this point, making further height increase impossible without medical intervention.
What is average adult height in Nigeria?
The average height for Nigerian men is approximately 163–165 cm (5'4" to 5'5") and for Nigerian women approximately 156–158 cm (5'1" to 5'2"). These vary by region and ethnic group. The Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa-Fulani groups have slightly different average heights.
